Okanagan Camping 2008

Page history last edited by Victor 3 years, 7 months ago

QUICK POST-TRIP SUMMARY

ACTIVITIES / WINE

  • Bear Creek campground was in a nice location by Kelowna. Nice day use area but don't expect a beach. The hike was easy.
  • KVR (Kettle Valley Railway) 24km roundtrip is the most beautiful bike ride ever. You can walk it too, its dead easy. Tricky gravel drive up 5k.
  • Sun Oka beach is the best in the area says the locals, but the sun sets early on it.
  • Do go rafting down the Channel in Penticton. They have rafts for rent, and pick you up in a bus for the way back!
  • Okanagan Lakes South campground was a small not very private site, but RIGHT on the water. Very close to Summerland wineries.
  • Naramata is a lot of hype, but there are some gems in here and very small family run wineries. Nothing to eat thouhg.
  • Favourite small wineries: Thornhaven (Sarah), Rollingdale (Jim), Silkscarf (Roie). Dirty Laundry is on the edge of the list if you like Gewurtztraminer's.
  • Other wineries visited: Quails' Gate, Sumac Ridge, Mission Hill. In Naramata,, La Frenz (lots of awards) and Red Rooster. Didn't get to visit Summerhill.
  • Golfing is cheap. Not many par 3's around but found a cheap one at Orchard Green that wasn't busy. $18 all day.

FOOD

  • Bouchons Bistro was good. Service from Marie Claude was perfect. The goat cheese pate was superb. The main of halibut and the old fashioned Cassoulet were good but not great. Met the owner. Nice quiet patio except construction across the street.
  • Skip Mad Mango, its owned by China immigrants and has every type of Asian food imaginable. Its OK if you're lookin for a $5 asian lunch fix. Veggies were fresh =P and locals seem to love it. Curry is their specialty.
  • Mission Hill ++++. Lunch on the terrace. Had to wait a bit so drove the short ways to Quail's Gate to tour it and came back. Trout was fantastic. Bison was the best I've ever had and presented beautifully. Wine tour is the best in town.
  • Gausthaus was full of seniors. Actually most of the trip was due to our timing. Pub food. Fish and chips were good though. Nice location across from the water. Not sure what the big fuss is about, but there aren't many eateries on this side of the lake.
  • Theo's Restaurant in Penticton was poor. Typical Greek fare. Large restaurant. Non-existent service and bland food.
  • Newly opened Amante Bistro is promising. The signature grilled romaine is outstanding. Definitely the trendiest in Penticton.

Let me know what time, I might hafta go downtown Sat but I prefer not to.
I bought a bike!! but unless I can procure a rack for my dad's 2008 Impreza hatchback i dont think we can bring ours :( it probably only uses factory racks since its got no hitch.
